Academic Associates Reading Program Description
The Academic Associates Reading Program is a complete course in reading and comprehension. It encompasses all the sounds, rules and processes of reading beginning with word-attack skills and progressively encompassing comprehension, retention, evaluation, application and fluency. It is easily adaptable for use in classrooms as the primary method of reading instruction, as well as for individual, small group and remedial instruction. The length of time to complete the course varies according to the age, speed and ability of students.
Objectives of the Reading Program
All students will learn:
- To decode written words by mastering all the sounds of each letter and combination of letters in the alphabet.
- To recognize and use rules of phonics to decode words correctly.
- To blend the sounds of letters to pronounce words, and to combine words into sentences.
- To master word-attack skills at a level at least appropriate to, and often exceeding, their current school grade-level.
- To read standardized material proficiently and fluently on their appropriate grade-level, and to score at least within the normal range of comprehension of that material.
About the Academic Associates Learning Centers
Academic Associates Reading Program is the most effective methodology for reading instruction. It was developed by Cliff Ponder after years of frustration as a teacher and principal.
Cliff Ponder has developed a very distinctive phonics-based reading program. The complete and authentic basis is the reason it is so successful with students of all ages. The program is successful with those diagnosed with dyslexia or other learning problems.
Many teachers now use the Academic Associates Reading Program in the classroom. Public and private schools have adopted our program.
Academic Associates Reading Course is a phonetic program based linguistically on the 44 sounds we use in English. There are 13 lessons (PDF) and each one focuses on decoding rules. A lesson takes as long as a student needs to be able to retain and apply those rules.
If the student doesn't have a firm base of phonetic tools it's very difficult to unlock complicated words. We prepare a solid foundation and then build on that foundation with more and more complex phonics tools until the student is reading fluently at an independent level. If the student has gone too far in school but hasn't acquired the necessary phonics skills then the gap widens between what he/she can read and what he/she is expected to know. So the older a student is before the reading problem is solved the more content knowledge that student has missed.
Students who complete the program typically gain 2 to 5 grade levels in their reading ability often as much or more in comprehension. When students are worked with one-to-one they complete the course in 30 to 60 hours. Since we teach at their individual learning pace we don't always know how long it will take a student to complete the course.
