The U.S. Small Business Administration will expand the e200 Emerging Leaders executive-level training initiative to eight new cities and communities in 2011. The expansion means the successful program will be available to entrepreneurs in 27 cities across the United States.

The first six of a series of grants to Small Business Development Centers around the country to expand access to programs to help entrepreneurs start or grow their businesses and create jobs were announced today by Deputy Administrator Marie Johns of the U.S. Small Business Administration. These first six grants are part of $50 million in funding included in the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 signed by the President last September.

In the week ending Jan. 15, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 404,000, a decrease of 37,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 441,000. The 4-week moving average was 411,750, a decrease of 4,000 from the previous week's revised average of 415,750. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.1 percent for the week ending Jan. 8, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 3.1 percent.

Small business employment continued to show growth in December with hours worked up and wages flat. 

SBA Administrator Karen Mills announced that as of Dec. 31 the agency had approved more than $10.3 billion in loan guarantees which supported more than $12 billion in lending to small businesses since President Obama signed the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 on Sept. 27. The Jobs Act included an extension of reduced fees and higher guarantee loan enhancements in the agency’s two largest loan programs.

In an open letter to small business owners, SBA Administrator Karen Mills described requirements that small businesses report all transactions greater than $600 as "burdensome," and called for their repeal. Mills said the reporting requirements in the Affordable Care Act, which were to have begun in 2012, add up to "too much paperwork, too much filing." 

It makes good business sense to let temporary tax rates for the highest income brackets expire and revert to 1990s levels on January 1, 2011 as scheduled. Families should keep tax cuts on their income below $250,000, but well-off families should not get extra tax cuts on their income above $250,000.

Congress should not let Wall Street and big business CEOs hide behind small business to justify a budget-busting $700 billion tax giveaway over the next decade that would be even more harmful for Main Street than it was the last decade. Job growth picked up last month to 151,000 as employers across a broad spectrum of industries added to their staff, the Labor Department reported Friday morning.

While the job situation was considerably improved from the summer, when layoffs in the public sector led to overall job losses, October's job gains were not enough to draw down the unemployment rate from 9.6 percent, where it has stayed for months. A Citigroup Inc.-backed fund has awarded millions to nonprofits aiming to boost small business lending in low-income areas.

The New York-based bank will send $60 million by the year's end to loan funds managed by Community Development Financial Institutions, or CDFIs, Citi said Wednesday. Community development lenders are nonprofits that seek to expand economic opportunity in areas that are underserved by traditional banks. 

Small business bankruptcy filings declined more than 11 percent in the third quarter of this year compared to a year ago and have decreased nearly 19 percent since their peak in Q2 2009, Equifax Inc. (NYSE: EFX) announced today. According to a new Gallup Survey,  Nearly half, 47%, of small-business owners now plan to never retire until forced to do so for health reasons -- up from about 4 in 10 in 2005 and 2007 -- according to a recent Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index poll. Another 41% plan to cut back on work but stay involved with their business when they retire. Those planning to stop working in their business altogether fell to 1 in 10 during 2010 from nearly twice that level in 2005.

On a conference call yesterday, a National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) committee has found indicators that the major U.S. recession lasted around 18 months- beginning December 2007 to June 2009.   They found that the U.S. economy experienced a "trough" in business activity in 2009 around the month of June indicating the end of a recession. 

According to today's Veterans Affairs press release, the Small Business Administration has recognized the VA with a grade "A" rating on the SBA's small business scorecard.  The high grade stems from the success in contracting with small businesses and the collaboration from the VA’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU) with other VA acquisition professionals.

Struggling small businesses may see some relief.  According to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Thursday is the scheduled date in which the Senate will vote on the Small Business Jobs Bill, followed by the vote on its final approval.  The Bill will provide loans and tax breaks to small businesses and is expected to gain quick House approval.

According to a White House press release on September 10, 2010, President Obama has already signed eight small business tax cuts into law over the last 2 years (2009 - 2010) and has eight more proposed tax cuts in the current Small Business Jobs Bill.
