As a single mom, or a stay at home mom, starting a home business can be a scary thing.  Whether you're going to be relying on your home business to pay the bills, or even just as a source of some additional income, the fact is that for most moms, failure really is not an option.  So, what do you do to insulate yourself from failure?  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Be Diligent
As a mom, this should be a skill that you've perfected by now, and following up over an over again with your clients and leads should be easier than potty training or teaching your child to enjoy broccoli.  In all seriousness, being a mom really does prepare you for a lot of the situations you'll encounter in business, but it can be a lot harder to want to stick it out and put in the long hours with a client that you barely know than spending time working on something with your own child.  The key is to know that hard work in the same direction always pays off, so don't become discouraged when it seems like you're spinning your tires.

Be Properly Motivated
Many people go into business because they want to make money or because their field is something that they're passionate about, but you have the advantage of being in business to provide for your kids.  Never underestimate the power of maternal instinct, and when you know that making the sale or not can have a negative impact on your kids, you'll be that much more motivated.  This is not to say that you use your kids to get ahead in business, just that you are properly focused, you know why you're doing what you're doing, and you don't become distracted by things that don't contribute to your primary goals.

Work Smart
Working smart has everything to do with good time management.  As a work at home mom, you'll want to make sure that you're devoting the proper amount of time to your work and your family.  You don't want the business to come before your family, but at the same time, there will be times where you do need to buckle down and get some work done.  Making a schedule and explaining it to your kids can be helpful, as well as planning activities for them for the times that you're going to be working while they're at home.  Finally, make sure that you do something fun with them after a long day of work.  It can be tough to want to "turn it on" for the kids after working all day, but you might be amazed to see how a smile on their faces can melt away all of the stress of even the toughest day in the office.

Being a work at home mom is hard work, and when failure is not an option, the stress can be almost unbearable.  Remember that you're more effective as a businesswoman and as a mom when you keep your cool, and remember that although it may seem like failure is not an option, don't let succeeding in your business come before the family, because there will always be other jobs, but family is forever.
